Mike Understands
Family Matters

Treating everyone equally. Showing compassion for those in need. Making a difference in society. These are values Mike’s family instilled in him growing up. As the grandson of a Native American grandfather and Irish immigrant grandmother, Mike was taught at a very early age to treat everyone with dignity and respect, regardless of their skin color and ethnicity. As one of six children, Mike learned from his parents the importance of fairness, hard work and a commitment to community service.

Mike Understands
Service Matters

Mike has led a life dedicated to serving his country. As a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point and following the terrorist attacks of 9/11, Mike deployed in support of combat operations during “the surge,” one of the deadliest times during the Iraq war. Serving as the Aide-de-Camp to the Commanding General of the 1st Infantry Division (Forward), Mike coordinated air and ground operations. He led his fellow Soldiers throughout Iraq ranging from the Iranian to Syrian borders and was awarded the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service.

"Mike Hastings is one the best [officers] I have known in 26 years of service. Maturity, common sense, organization, and a genuine love for Soldiers set Mike Hastings above his peers. His communication and interpersonal skills are some of the best that I have ever observed. He showed an amazing ability to work with our Iraqi counterparts -- he was respected by Iraqis, our Coalition Allies, and Americans alike. He was a master of coordination and time-management and always remained calm under pressure. Mike Hastings is a fearless, talented, and dynamic combat leader. I know no one who could have done it better."

– Major General Dana J.H. Pittard

Mike Understands
Teamwork Matters

As an athlete, businessman or state Senator, Mike has always understood you make sound decisions by building teams with diverse life experiences. Mike became one of Johnson and & Johnson’s top sales managers by leading the turnaround of a struggling division, building relationships and cooperation with hospital executives and nursing staff from different socioeconomic backgrounds to improve quality health care for patients across the Midwest. Now as state Senator, Mike has successfully championed legislation focused on helping working class families, bringing together community advocates and industry leaders to produce sound public policy.

Balance Matters

Mike understands happy home life is always his first priority. As a working parent and state Senator, it is all too easy to become wrapped up in the serious issues facing the State of Illinois. Mike makes it a priority to spend quality time with his children, Mikey (6) and Maddie (2). Whether it is baking with the “Cake Boss,” racing Hot Wheels, or playing Doc McStuffins, Mike believes making quality time with his family is critical to his professional success.
